We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills. The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences. About the Team The Strategic Futures team is a small, research- and writing-focused group exploring how advanced AI could reshape public policy, institutions, and society over the long term. We operate like an internal think tank: developing clear views of desirable long-range outcomes, examining the choices that could make those outcomes more likely, and producing ideas that help OpenAI and the broader public navigate profound technological change. The team is intentionally lean and highly collaborative. Our work draws from public policy, law, economics, political science, history, institutional design, technology, and other relevant disciplines. We partner closely with experts across OpenAI to connect long-range thinking with evolving AI capabilities, organizational priorities, and real-world policy questions. About the Role We are looking for a highly organized and strategic operator to serve as Chief of Staff and Program Manager for the Strategic Futures team. Working closely with the team’s leader, you will translate broad priorities into coordinated execution, establish the systems and operating rhythms that keep a small team performing at a high level, and ensure important work moves forward with clarity and consistency. This is a hands-on role combining chief-of-staff partnership, program management, strategic planning, cross-functional coordination, and communications. You will make it easier for the team to focus on high-quality research and writing by ensuring priorities are clear, decisions are documented, dependencies are visible, collaborators are engaged, and follow-through is reliable. You will also serve as a central connector between Strategic Futures and teams across OpenAI, helping the group build trusted relationships, navigate organizational complexity, and contribute effectively to broader company priorities. As such, this role is based in San Francisco. In this role, you will: Partner closely with the leader of Strategic Futures to translate the team’s strategic direction into clear priorities, operating plans, and concrete deliverables. Own team-wide planning and execution across research projects, publications, cross-functional collaborations, public-facing work, and special initiatives. Convert open-ended goals into structured workplans with clear outcomes, owners, milestones, timelines, dependencies, and decision points. Develop and maintain lightweight operating systems, including team roadmaps, project trackers, meeting cadences, decision logs, risk registers, and publication or launch plans. Establish operating rhythms that give the team appropriate visibility and accountability without creating unnecessary process. Coordinate work across Global Affairs, Legal, Research, product policy, safety, preparedness, Communications, and other relevant teams. Build productive relationships with internal partners and help ensure Strategic Futures has a clear and consistent presence across the organization. Prepare executive-ready briefings, strategic updates, presentations, agendas, decision documents, talking points, and other written materials. Plan and run effective team and cross-functional meetings, ensuring participants are prepared, decisions are captured, and action items are completed. Anticipate potential bottlenecks, gaps, and competing priorities, and proactively develop solutions that keep work moving. Maintain visibility across the team’s portfolio and help the team leader make informed prioritization and resource-allocation decisions. Coordinate internal review and approval processes for research, publications, presentations, and other public-facing work. Support external engagements, convenings, and public communication when appropriate. Develop AI-enabled workflows that improve project management, knowledge sharing, information synthesis, coordination, and team effectiveness. Help define and evolve the team’s operating model, norms, and ways of working as Strategic Futures grows. You might thrive in this role if you: Have 5 or more years of experience in chief-of-staff roles, program management, strategic operations, research operations, consulting, policy, communications, or a related field. Have demonstrated success driving complex initiatives involving multiple stakeholders, functions, and competing priorities. Bring exceptional organizational skills and the ability to create clarity, momentum, and accountability in an ambiguous environment. Can move fluidly between strategic questions and detailed execution, from helping shape a team-wide priority to ensuring the next meeting has the right pre-read and decision-maker. Know when a new process or system will improve execution—and when it would simply add unnecessary overhead. Are energized by helping highly independent researchers and writers do their best work. Are an excellent writer and synthesizer who can turn complex discussions into clear decisions, plans, briefings, and communications. Build trusted relationships across policy, legal, communications, product, safety, and technical research teams. Can engage credibly with subject-matter experts without needing to be the deepest expert in every discipline. Exercise excellent judgment and discretion when working on sensitive, high-visibility, or still-developing initiatives. Proactively identify what needs to happen next rather than waiting for detailed direction. Bring high ownership, strong attention to detail, low ego, and a consistent bias toward action. Are comfortable operating in a fast-moving organization where priorities may evolve as AI capabilities and external conditions change. Have strong interest in advanced AI and its long-term implications for public policy, governance, institutions, and society. Are proficient with AI tools and can apply them thoughtfully to operational workflows, research synthesis, knowledge management, and coordination. It would be nice if you: Have worked in AI policy, emerging technology, government, public affairs, a think tank, a research organization, or another intellectually intensive environment. Have supported a senior leader while simultaneously owning a broader portfolio of programs and team operations. Have experience coordinating research publications, external communications, public events, or other high-visibility outputs. Have helped establish or scale the operating model of a new team, organization, or function. Are familiar with the organizational and policy questions surrounding advanced AI. About the Team OpenAI’s Applied AI Engineering team helps organizations turn frontier AI capabilities into safe, reliable, and high-impact production systems. We work with customer executives, product and engineering teams, security leaders, and transformation teams to identify valuable opportunities, accelerate technical implementation, and scale what works. Enterprise deployments are defined by complexity rather than any one industry: existing architectures, diverse data environments, security and governance requirements, multiple stakeholder groups, and organization-wide change. We turn lessons from these deployments into better products and reusable patterns for customers everywhere. About the Role As an Applied AI Engineer, you will partner directly with Digital Native companies to design, build and deploy AI-powered products and systems. Working alongside customer product and engineering teams, you will take ideas from early experimentation through evaluation, production launch and scale, connecting technical decisions to user experience and measurable business impact. You will write and debug code, build evaluation systems, resolve complex integrations, and guide decisions involving model behavior, reliability, latency, cost, safety, security, governance, and operational readiness. Success is measured by production systems, sustained adoption, and meaningful customer impact—not simply activity or successful demonstrations. This is a rare opportunity to work on consequential real-world deployments at the frontier of AI while directly influencing how OpenAI’s products evolve. This role is based in London. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees In this role, you will: Partner directly with Digital Native customers to identify high-value opportunities and translate them into technical architectures, implementation plans, evaluation strategies, and measurable success criteria. Design, build, and deploy AI systems that solve important customer problems and produce measurable business outcomes. Work hands-on in code to build prototypes, evaluation harnesses, reference implementations, integrations, and production accelerators. Make sound technical decisions across models, agents, retrieval, tools, data, reliability, observability, latency, cost, safety, security, and governance. Diagnose complex implementation challenges, reproduce failures, test hypotheses, and drive blockers toward resolution. Help customers progress from promising prototypes to reliable production systems, sustained adoption, and scaled impact. Partner closely with customer engineering teams and OpenAI Product, Research, Engineering, Security, and go-to-market teams, translating deployment experience into high-signal product feedback. Create reusable architectures, tooling, playbooks, and technical guidance that accelerate future enterprise deployments. You’ll thrive in this role if you: Have a demonstrated track record of designing, building, and delivering AI or machine-learning systems in enterprise environments, including taking systems from prototype to production. Relevant backgrounds may include applied AI or ML engineering, forward-deployed engineering, software engineering, customer engineering, solutions architecture, or technical consulting. Can point to substantial personal contributions in code, architecture, evaluation, debugging, or production engineering—not only program or stakeholder management. Are highly proficient in Python and comfortable working across an AI application stack; experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, or another relevant language is valuable. Understand how to evaluate AI systems systematically using representative data, graders, production signals, and human judgment. Have navigated enterprise production requirements such as integrations, reliability, observability, security, privacy, data governance, performance, and cost. Can connect technical decisions to customer workflows, adoption, and measurable business outcomes. Communicate with clarity and credibility across hands-on engineers, technical leaders, security teams, product leaders, and executives. Bring high agency, strong technical judgment, and end-to-end ownership in ambiguous environments. Learn quickly, challenge assumptions constructively, and collaborate with humility; experience in a particular industry or with OpenAI products is not required. About OpenAI OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. We push the boundaries of the capabilities of AI systems and seek to safely deploy them to the world through our products. About Anthropic Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems. About the role Anthropic’s engineers are building some of the most ambitious AI systems and applications in the world. We also help engineers, architects, and technical practitioners across Anthropic, our partners, and our customers learn to build with Claude. Until now, technical instruction has largely been a shared responsibility. We are building a dedicated technical instruction function to make that learning exceptional and ensure that everyone who teaches in Anthropic’s technical programs meets a consistent, high bar. We are looking for a Technical Instructor Lead in New York to help bring that standard to life. About half of your time will be spent delivering ILT hands-on technical instruction in New York and remotely across European time zones. The other half will be spent developing other instructors, running train-the-trainer programs, and improving the quality and consistency of technical instruction across programs. You are an engineer who teaches and a teacher who makes other teachers better. You can build an agent live in front of a skeptical staff engineer, diagnose a broken lab while a room of learners waits, and adapt when a lesson is not landing. You can also watch another instructor teach for ten minutes and identify the one change that will materially improve their next session. This is not primarily an instructional design or classroom facilitation role. You should be comfortable writing code, debugging technical systems, and teaching practitioners who may know more than you do about their particular domain. You will report to the Head of Technical Training. Key responsibilities Deliver hands-on technical instruction across Anthropic’s onboarding, residency, and technical enablement programs, in person in New York and remotely across European time zones. Model excellent technical teaching for audiences ranging from small, interactive labs to 100+ technical practitioners, adapting to different levels of experience and technical depth. Run train-the-trainer programs for internal experts, contract instructors, and training partners, using Anthropic’s practice-teach, feedback, and certification processes. Coach and calibrate instructors through live and recorded observations, actionable feedback, and recommendations on readiness to teach specific content. Partner with technical experts to turn subject matter expertise into effective sessions, labs, exercises, and demonstrations, and improve content based on what happens in the room. Own instructional quality in assigned programs, staffing yourself and cleared instructors into East Coast program calendars and ensuring delivery meets Anthropic’s standards. Use learner and instructor data to identify gaps in instruction and recommend improvements to curriculum, delivery, and instructor development. Help evolve Anthropic’s technical instruction function, bringing your experience from the room into our standards, instructor development practices, and approach to scaling quality. Minimum qualifications 6+ years of relevant professional experience across software engineering, solutions engineering, developer advocacy, technical education, or another technically deep role. 3+ years of hands-on technical instruction, including teaching engineers in live environments both in person and remotely. You know how to make difficult technical concepts click and how to adapt when they do not. Production engineering experience. You have written and shipped production software and can engage credibly with experienced engineers on architecture, implementation, debugging, and technical tradeoffs. Recent hands-on AI development. Within the past three years, you have built or debugged applications using LLM APIs, agents, tool use, MCP, or related technologies. You are comfortable with rapidly changing AI development tools and unfamiliar technical problems. Instructor development experience. You have helped other instructors or technical presenters improve through observation, structured feedback, practice teaching, or train-the-trainer programs. New York City location or willingness to relocate. You will work from our NYC office whenever an instructor-led program is in session there, typically around three days per week. The role includes approximately 25% travel to San Francisco and, over time, Europe. Preferred qualifications Experience designing or operating a train-the-trainer, instructor certification, or observer-calibration program. A portfolio of sessions, labs, or courses you have designed and taught, plus material you created so others could teach it. Experience teaching across time zones or to European audiences, including coaching instructors from recorded sessions. Experience using Claude Code or a comparable agentic coding tool as a significant part of your engineering workflow. Experience building with the Claude Developer Platform through Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, Microsoft Foundry, or comparable infrastructure. Experience with public speaking, conference workshops, or developer advocacy. Deep enthusiasm for AI and a genuine commitment to building and deploying it responsibly. The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. Annual Salary: $270,000 — $310,000 USD Logistics Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time.
