About the Team OpenAI’s Applied AI Engineering team helps organizations turn frontier AI capabilities into safe, reliable, and high-impact production systems. For software engineering organizations, this means helping customers adopt Codex and other OpenAI capabilities across the software development lifecycle—transforming how teams plan, build, test, review, and deliver software. We work directly with engineering leaders and hands-on developers to identify high-value opportunities, design and implement AI-powered development workflows, and scale what works across engineering organizations. We turn lessons from these deployments into better products, reusable architectures, and technical patterns that help developers everywhere get more value from Codex. About the Role As an Applied AI Engineer focused on Codex, you will partner directly with leading engineering organizations to design, build, and deploy AI systems that transform how software is developed. You will combine deep technical judgment, hands-on engineering, and customer leadership to take ambitious ideas from workflow and use-case selection through prototyping, evaluation, production rollout, and scaled adoption. You will work alongside engineering teams to build advanced AI coding workflows, integrations, automations, and evaluation systems—often using Codex itself as part of your development process. You will help customers make technical decisions involving model behavior, agentic workflows, developer environments, security, reliability, evaluation, and operational readiness, while ensuring deployments translate into measurable improvements in engineering productivity and software delivery. You will work closely with OpenAI Product, Research, Engineering, Security, Sales, and the broader Codex organization, translating real-world deployment experience into high-signal product and model feedback. Success is measured by production systems, sustained developer adoption, and meaningful improvements to how engineering organizations build software—not simply successful demonstrations or enablement activity. This role is based in Tokyo, Japan. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees. In this role, you will: Partner directly with engineering leaders and hands-on developers to identify high-value opportunities for Codex and translate them into technical architectures, implementation plans, evaluation strategies, and measurable success criteria. Design, build, and deploy AI-powered software development workflows that improve how engineering teams plan, write, test, review, debug, and deliver software. Work hands-on in code to build prototypes, evaluation harnesses, reference implementations, integrations, workflow automations, and production accelerators—often using Codex as part of your own development process. Help customers progress from promising experiments to reliable production workflows, sustained developer adoption, and scaled impact across engineering organizations. Design systematic approaches for evaluating AI coding systems using representative software engineering tasks, automated graders, production signals, and developer feedback. Make sound technical decisions across models, agents, tools, developer environments, integrations, reliability, observability, latency, cost, safety, security, and operational readiness. Diagnose complex implementation challenges, reproduce failures, test hypotheses, and drive technical blockers toward resolution. Lead technical deep dives, workshops, and hands-on enablement that help engineering teams understand and adopt advanced AI coding workflows effectively and safely. Gather high-fidelity insights from real-world Codex deployments and translate them into clear product proposals, model feedback, and technical requirements for OpenAI Product, Research, and Engineering teams. About Anthropic Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems. About the role Procurement Operations is the front door for buying at Anthropic. We sit inside Finance Operations and own the path from “I need to buy something” to a signed agreement, an accurate purchase order, and clean spend data at month-end. We are hiring a Procurement Operations Business Partner to own that path for our research organizations and the special programs that spawn out of it. This portfolio behaves differently from the rest of the company in that it purchases goods and services from highly-specialized vendors and new programs regularly appear with real purchasing needs before any process exists for them. You will be the person who makes all of that feel simple to the researchers and program leads who depend on it, and reliable to the Finance stakeholders behind it. This is a high-volume role with an accounting core. You ensure every purchase in the portfolio is coded, dated, received, and accrued correctly, so research spend is right in the books every month. Expect a steady queue of requests, work orders, and change orders, and expect to be the person Accounting trusts on all of it. We use Claude as part of our daily workflow and are looking for someone who wants to help define what an AI-native procurement operations function looks like, including how AI changes intake, document review, vendor coordination, and requester support. Responsibilities Own the purchasing path for R&D Manage a high volume of purchase requests, work orders, and change orders each month across research teams and programs, keeping speed and accuracy high at the same time. Serve as the primary procurement partner for Anthropic's research teams and special programs, guiding requesters from initial request to signed agreement and issued purchase order. Review every purchase request in your portfolio for the things that matter downstream: the right vendor record and contracting entity, complete commercial documents, correct spend categorization and service dates, and the approvals the purchase actually needs. Determine what each request requires before it can move, whether that is a statement of work, an order form, an amendment, a security or privacy review, or a third party risk assessment, and route it to the right reviewers the first time. Launch and track contract review with Legal, keep it moving, and confirm the executed agreement supports the purchase order before it is issued. Structure purchase orders so they match how the vendor bills (fixed fee, milestone, per-unit, or usage in arrears) and how Accounting needs to see the spend, with the right GL account, cost center, and service period on every line. Manage change orders, renewals, and closures over the life of each agreement. Act as the dedicated operations partner for our research services vendor portfolio, where engagements are structured as master agreements with frequent work orders and scope changes, and where speed and documentation discipline both matter. Handle the mechanics that come with hardware, equipment, and lab purchasing, including multi line quotes, lead times, shipping and receiving, and asset handoffs. Financial completeness & accuracy Code every purchase order correctly at creation, including GL account, spend category, cost center, and service period, and understand how each choice lands in the financials (expense vs. prepaid, capitalized equipment vs. operating spend). Work the hard cases with Accounting: services that span periods, partially delivered milestones, per-unit work billed in arrears, credits and true-ups, and work orders amended mid-month. Own the open purchase order book: receipts recorded against actual delivery, periodic reviews, stale line cleanup, coding corrections, and timely closures, so PO, receipt, and invoice agree. Serve as the first line reviewer for month end accruals on your portfolio, gathering estimates from vendors and budget owners for variable spend and confirming or correcting proposed amounts so Accounting can close on time. Partner with Accounts Payable to resolve invoice holds, PO mismatches, and receiving questions so vendors are paid on time and spend lands where it belongs. Support audit and reporting requests that touch your portfolio, including commitment schedules and control evidence, with data you can stand behind. Stand up new programs Be the first procurement call when a new research program or initiative spins up. Scope what they will buy and how often, agree a right sized path with Legal, Security, and Finance, and have it working before volume arrives. Run a regular pipeline check in with your highest velocity teams so upcoming purchases are visible early and nothing urgent arrives as a surprise. Translate procurement, legal, security, and finance requirements into plain language for researchers and engineers, and carry their operating reality back to those teams so controls fit the work. Be the front door Be visible and responsive in your teams' Slack channels and office hours; answer routine purchasing questions quickly and escalate real blockers with context. Apply purchasing policy consistently and explain the why, including approval thresholds, signature authority, and when an exception is and is not available. Continuous improvement Maintain the playbooks, intake guidance, and standard operating procedures for your portfolio so the path is repeatable and does not live in one person's head. Identify manual steps, repeat questions, and failure points and fix them, including where Claude and workflow automation with AI can take work off requesters and the team. Minimum qualifications Proven track record of owning a high-volume purchasing portfolio end-to-end in procure-to-pay and intake platform. Solid working knowledge of accrual accounting as it applies to purchasing: accruals and reversals, service period and cutoff, prepaid vs. expense, and GL and cost center coding. You can explain how a purchase order becomes an entry in the general ledger. Experience supporting outsourced or managed service vendors at scale, where scope and volume move month to month and the contracts, purchase orders, and invoices have to keep up with each other. Working knowledge of how contract review, security and privacy review, and financial controls fit together in a purchase, and the judgment to know when to push a request through and when to slow it down. Preferred qualifications 5-7+ years of procurement operations, purchasing, or vendor operations, including time supporting a research, engineering, hardware, or outsourced services organization. Experience as the embedded procurement partner for a hyper scaling data operations, ML, RL, and lab environments Time at a hypergrowth technology company scaling procurement operations for outsourced or vendor delivered work. Background in accounting, accounts payable, or a month-end close process, including experience with three-way match Sourced human data, data labeling, annotation, or evaluation vendors (or comparable BPO and outsourced operations) with a point of view on where that market is heading Direct experience with Zip, Workday Financials, and Ironclad. Prior ownership of month end accrual review or open PO reconciliation for a large, variable spend portfolio Experience designing tiered intake or approval frameworks that sped up low risk purchases without weakening controls. In this role, you will: Design, build, and operate components of the Host Assurance platform that establish trust in both bare-metal & VM hosts before they are eligible for production use. Help ensure hosts are verifiably trustworthy from delivery and installation through secure bootstrap and readiness to join orchestration systems. Build and improve systems such as machine identity, certificate issuance and enrollment, HSM-backed or key-management-backed trust services, host attestation, measurement, and baseline verification tooling. Validate delivered hardware and firmware against vendor claims and continuously detect and manage drift over time. Eliminate insecure bootstrap patterns while preserving deployment throughput and operational reliability. Partner with provisioning, fleet, and orchestration teams to deliver paved paths where the secure approach is the easiest approach. Own software components through implementation, operational readiness, launch, and ongoing operation. Define readiness criteria, validate behavior under load and failure, establish monitoring and actionable alerts, plan staged rollouts and tested recovery procedures, and maintain runbooks. Use production experience to improve reliability and reduce operational burden. Participate in production support via oncall rotation. Help define observable, testable security properties for host platforms and improve the telemetry and validation needed to enforce them in practice. Work across different deployment models and provider boundaries while maintaining a consistent bar for host trust outcomes. You might thrive in this role if you: Have strong software engineering experience building and operating reliable production systems at scale. Bring depth in distributed systems, backend or platform engineering, operating systems, or infrastructure security. Experience with PKI, HSMs, machine identity, attestation, secure boot, or hardware security is valuable but not required. Can reason across services, APIs, and host software, and learn the boot, firmware, and hardware trust mechanisms relevant to your work. Apply sound judgment to trust boundaries, correctness, and safe failure behavior. Have experience writing production quality code and ability to reason clearly about failure modes, operational safety, and long-term maintainability. Have experience supporting critical production systems at scale, such as being on-call. Balance rigor with pragmatism, and care about making strong security controls deployable in real-world environments. Are self-directed, low ego, and willing to work across disciplines to solve the most important problems. Enjoy building in ambiguous spaces where the architecture is still emerging, stakes are at all time high, and the future is being built. We are hiring a Security Software Engineer to design and implement the hardware-backed security foundations used across OpenAI’s device ecosystem. A central focus of this role is hardening the boundary between our policy systems and the HSMs that protect sensitive cryptographic keys. This boundary determines which operations may be performed, what may be signed, which policies must be satisfied, and how changes to trusted software and policy are authorized. You will develop security-critical software and firmware within, or immediately adjacent to, an HSM trust boundary. Depending on your background, this may include HSM trusted applications, firmware services, cryptographic mechanisms, device drivers, PKCS#11 components, secure-provisioning protocols, or signing-policy enforcement systems. This is a hands-on software-engineering role. You will be expected to design systems, write and review production code, debug across hardware and software boundaries, and carry projects from initial requirements through deployment. It is not an HSM administration, PKI operations, compliance, or architecture-only position. In This Role, You Will Design and implement security-critical software and firmware for HSMs, secure elements, trusted execution environments, and hardware roots of trust. Build and harden the policy-to-HSM boundary responsible for authorizing certificate issuance and cryptographic signing operations. Develop HSM trusted applications, firmware components, host interfaces, device drivers, SDKs, or cryptographic service integrations. Implement or extend cryptographic interfaces such as PKCS#11, OpenSSL providers or engines, platform key-storage APIs, or comparable hardware-security interfaces. Build firmware and software that cryptographically enforces key generation, provisioning, usage, rotation, recovery, and destruction policies. Design and implement HSM-backed certificate authority, code-signing, key-management, and device-identity systems. Develop end-to-end cryptographic protocols spanning devices, secure hardware, policy services, and backend infrastructure. Build security capabilities supporting device attestation, secure boot, factory provisioning and restoration, user registration, and authentication. Design controls that make trusted software and policy changes verifiable, auditable, and subject to appropriate multi-party authorization. Write, review, test, and audit secure embedded software for resource-constrained environments. Develop test harnesses, emulators, fuzzers, and fault-injection tooling to validate security properties and failure behavior. Threat-model hardware and software trust boundaries and translate findings into concrete engineering improvements. Partner with hardware, firmware, infrastructure, application, and security teams to integrate secure-by-default capabilities into production systems. Help establish engineering standards for HSM development, applied cryptography, secure key management, and certificate infrastructure. Minimum Qualifications 5+ years experience building secure embedded firmware for constrained environments Deep programming experience in C, C++, or Rust. You Might Thrive in This Role If You Have A strong track record of designing, implementing, debugging, and shipping production systems software. Experience developing one or more of the following: HSM firmware or trusted applications Cryptographic mechanisms or hardware-accelerated cryptographic services HSM device drivers, host libraries, SDKs, or middleware PKCS#11 providers, mechanisms, or integrations Secure key-provisioning or key-injection protocols HSM-backed certificate authority or code-signing systems Signing-policy enforcement within a hardware-backed trust boundary Strong knowledge of applied cryptography, digital signatures, key hierarchies, secure key management, and cryptographic protocol design. Experience with PKI, X.509 certificates, certificate authorities, certificate issuance, and certificate lifecycle protocols. Familiarity with secure boot, measured boot, device identity, remote attestation, or hardware-backed storage. Experience reasoning about concurrency, memory safety, privilege separation, hardware interfaces, failure modes, and side-channel or physical attack considerations. The ability to evaluate security designs and personally implement the software required to realize them. Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate across hardware, firmware, backend, and product teams. Additional Experience That May Be Helpful Firmware development for ARM TrustZone or another trusted execution environment. Experience with commercial or cloud HSM platforms such as Thales Luna, Entrust/nShield, Utimaco, Marvell LiquidSecurity, AWS CloudHSM, or comparable systems. Experience with PKCS#11, KMIP, OpenSSL providers or engines, secure-element APIs, or platform-native key-storage frameworks. Device manufacturing, secure provisioning, factory restore, or silicon bring-up experience. Secure boot ROM, bootloader, firmware-signing, anti-rollback, or authenticated-update development. Developing trusted applications or cryptographic services inside an HSM or secure coprocessor. Hardware/software co-design involving cryptographic accelerators, secure processors, or custom silicon. Multi-party authorization, quorum-controlled deployments, tamper-resistant audit mechanisms, or attestable policy systems. Secure or private storage systems based on hardware-protected keys. Experience sustaining high-assurance security software in production. About the role Prompts spec out what Claude does. Evals measure whether it did. The Product Prompt and Eval Design team does both for product design: the system prompt that greets a new user, the tool descriptions that decide whether Claude searches, the instructions that keep a slide deck from tipping into slop, and the evals that test all of it. The point is to keep the model and the product aligned with what users expect, what the product strategy calls for, and what safety requires, on every surface and through every model launch. This role is a foundational member of that work on the eval side: building the evals that check the prompts, the harness that runs them, and the tools that let designers do this work themselves. It sits on the Product Prompt and Eval Design team in Product Design, works day to day with the team's surface owners and the engineers in each product team, and pairs per surface with the prompt engineering team at model releases. Key responsibilities Write and revise the prompts behind Claude's tools, features, and behaviors on a product surface; test the surface, turn findings into prompt fixes, ship them, and confirm the prompt users get is the one intended Build the graders that prove a prompt fix and rerun on the next model; turn designers' hand-run rubrics into automated evals, then read transcripts for what the eval missed Build visual, low-code eval tools designers can use without an engineer: assemble a comparison set from real transcripts, turn a plain-English rubric into a grader, compare prompt variants across models side by side, and read results in the tool rather than a notebook Watch designers use those tools and make them simpler Support model releases: test each surface against the new model, write prompt fixes and migrations, and write prompts for features launching with it, so the surface owner's call has numbers behind it Stand up and scale the eval harness: build the test environment that exercises our 50 to 100 tools with trustworthy settings, keep evals green across models, and call whether a regression is the harness or the model Package what prompting can't fix for training, with the eval attached: graders for crisp behaviors, human-feedback questions and good/bad pairs for fuzzy ones like writing quality Minimum qualifications Production-quality Python Experience building and maintaining evaluation pipelines for LLM products: graders, rubrics, comparison sets, regression suites, and the plumbing that runs them across models Experience building internal tools with a real interface for people who do not write code Experience standing up test harnesses, sandboxing tool calls, and pinning the settings that make runs comparable Experience shipping prompts, or working closely with people who do, and understanding why a prompt that works on one model fails on the next Reads transcripts, not only scores Preferred qualifications Has worked inside a model-launch cycle A/B testing experience and the ability to connect offline evals to online outcomes Front-end or notebook-to-app experience, and opinions about what makes an eval result legible at a glance Has turned product rubrics into training signal: graders, human-feedback questions, or preference pairs Cares how Claude behaves for the people using it, not only whether the metric moved The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team. Your safety matters to us. How we're different We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills. The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences. Come work with us! Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues. About the Team The Industrial Security team enables OpenAI’s classified and national security work by building secure, compliant programs that support government customers and protect sensitive information. We partner across Security, Legal, People, Facilities, Engineering, IT, and program leadership to translate complex government requirements into practical operating models that allow important work to move forward responsibly. Our work spans personnel security, classified facilities, special programs, government customer engagement, and the safeguards required to operate in highly regulated environments. About the Role As a Senior Special Programs Security Manager, you will lead security operations for OpenAI’s Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) and Special Access Programs (SAP), serving in customer-designated roles such as Contractor Special Security Officer (CSSO) or Contractor Program Security Officer (CPSO). You will help shape how OpenAI operates across the Intelligence Community and other national security environments, building the relationships, processes, and security foundations required to support classified work at scale. We’re looking for someone who brings deep special programs expertise, sound operational judgment, and the credibility to work directly with government customers and senior internal stakeholders. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone comfortable navigating ambiguity, helping build the function, mentoring future team members, and finding compliant paths forward when mission needs and security requirements intersect. This role is based in San Francisco, CA, or Washington, DC. We use a hybrid work model of three days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees. Additional onsite presence and occasional travel may be required based on classified program, facility, and government customer needs. This position requires active Top Secret eligibility, current SCI access, and a current counterintelligence (CI) polygraph at the time of application. Candidates must also be able to obtain and maintain additional customer-required accesses, including a full-scope polygraph if required. In this role, you will: Lead SCI and SAP security operations across the program lifecycle, including access administration, indoctrinations and debriefings, security plans, classification requirements, incident reporting, inspections, and program closeout. Serve as the designated CSSO, CPSO, or equivalent program security official for assigned government customers and classified programs. Build and maintain trusted relationships with Intelligence Community and Department of Defense customers, government security officers, program security officers, and other external security stakeholders. Oversee the establishment, accreditation, operation, modification, and inspection readiness of Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities and Special Access Program Facilities. Translate government regulations, contract requirements, DD Forms 254, security classification guides, and customer direction into practical policies, procedures, and operating decisions. Coordinate closely with personnel security, information systems security, classified IT, Facilities, Legal, and program teams to establish clear ownership and integrated safeguards. Lead self-inspections, security inquiries, corrective actions, customer assessments, and escalation of risks that could affect access, accreditation, or program execution. Advise Industrial Security leadership, independently represent the security function, and provide operational continuity across critical programs and customer relationships. Mentor and develop special programs security personnel while establishing the staffing, metrics, governance, and operating rhythms needed to support continued growth. Enable classified work through risk-informed decisions while maintaining the judgment and authority to stop or escalate activity that would violate security requirements. You might thrive in this role if you: Have substantial experience leading contractor security for SCI and SAP programs, including direct experience as a CSSO, CPSO, CSPSO, SSO, or comparable customer-designated security official. Understand how Intelligence Community customers operate, including sponsor relationships, access processes, reciprocity, customer-specific requirements, and appropriate escalation channels. Have strong working knowledge of the NISPOM, ICDs 703, 704, and 705, Intelligence Community technical specifications for SCIFs, DoDM 5205.07, applicable Security Executive Agent Directives, and related customer guidance. Have established, accredited, operated, or modified SCIFs or SAPFs and can coordinate facility, physical security, information security, and technical accreditation requirements. Have successfully managed government customer relationships and can communicate clearly with security officials, technical teams, program leaders, and senior executives. Have led security inspections, customer reviews, incident response, corrective actions, and closure of complex compliance findings. Exercise strong judgment under pressure and can distinguish between requirements that can be addressed creatively and boundaries that cannot be crossed. Enjoy building teams, improving operating models, clarifying ownership, and creating durable processes in fast-moving environments, and are eager to use approved AI tools, agents, and automations to reduce administrative burden, improve visibility, and scale sound judgment without replacing sponsor approvals, security authority, or required human review. Hold active Top Secret eligibility and current SCI access with a current counterintelligence polygraph, and can obtain and maintain a full-scope polygraph or other customer-required access. Bring additional experience across multiple Intelligence Community or SAP customers, industrial security program buildouts, COMSEC, insider threat, or related security leadership disciplines.
